I get asked why classical Pilates lessons are required when a cheaper option of classical Pilates classes is available. Classical Pilates is not just about moving and breaking a sweat. Understanding how to perform the exercises with the right form and efficiency is vital to getting the best results from your workout. Below are some of the reasons why classical Pilates private lessons help:
Detailed Supervision
In a private session, you are my one and only priority! The one-on-one setting gives me and you the chance to know your body more personally and in depth. The smallest things, like whether you hyperextend, are letting go of your stomach, or are losing the neutral spine, can be addressed easily. I give you the type of attention you wouldn’t be able to have in a class full of people. A few sessions with me, and I will become tuned in to your body and all of its strengths and weaknesses and be able to create an exercise plan that works best for you.

Everyone has different goals when beginning or continuing a workout regimen. Some people focus on toning, some on strengthening, or they want to do Pilates for rehabilitation from an injury. Private sessions really allow me to focus on exactly what you are looking for with your body. Pilates is very much about technique and learning to work from the right muscles. This varies for each individual, as each body has different strengths and weaknesses. From the moment you walk into your first private session, I will teach you all about the subtleties associated with the exercises and even give you tips on how to use the learnings in your daily life.
Understand the Pilates Language
Classical Pilates is heavily anatomically focused. You will hear terms like Sitzbones, powerhouse, two-way stretch, and all used. In the private sessions, I will really explain these terms and help you achieve them with your body, so you’ll be speaking the Pilates language in no time!
No Competition
The stress of having to work out in front of people you don’t know is lowered by taking a private Pilates class. You don’t have to worry if you are able to keep pace with other people or if the class is lagging behind because you are doing as well as the others. I am there to focus on just you. Treat me as a supportive friend, and ask me whatever you want to ask.
Injuries and health issues
A private session with me can assist you and your injury more individually than if you were to attend a Pilates class. Say you were a football player and have issues with knee joint pain. I can really create workouts to focus on your specific body needs. Having someone by your side to help you determine your optimal range of motion and help you with your gait patterns or any asymmetry that you may have can really help you heal your injuries and not further worsen them without the attention you need.

I understand the financial reasoning for choosing a Pilates class versus private Pilates classes. But it is important to invest in quality instruction and learn the correct technique to get the full benefits of Pilates. My job is to motivate you and keep you accountable when you need that extra push you can’t get on your own! I teach my Pilates lesson like a Pilates teacher to make it very specific to you and not like a Pilates class wherein most of the cues I use would be off the shelf just to meet the various types of bodies in front of me.
